Discover the beauty and monumental art of the south. Next stop, Granada!
Granada displays its beauty and historical past in this fourth stop on our trip through Spain
For centuries, Granada has been the setting chosen by history to deposit all its art and, therefore, it is also a perfect setting to celebrate our fifteenth anniversary. From the majestic Alhambra to the vibrant alleys of the Albaicín, the city is poetry.
Exploring its treasures
This ancient city is home to numerous impressive monuments, making planning a tourist route a challenge. To avoid making mistakes, we will start this list of recommendations with its emblem.
- The Alhambra, an architectural jewel from the Nasrid period, dominates the horizon with its towers and walls, and hides incredible gardens. A piece of advice, when you arrive at the Patio de los Leones, stop time between its columns to leisurely immerse your gaze in its central fountain.
- The Albaicín neighborhood, declared a World Heritage Site, will transport you to past centuries with its narrow cobblestone streets and white houses. Look for the Church of San Nicolás for an unforgettable view of the Alhambra. If you illuminate it with the evening light, it will be even more magical.
- The cathedral, a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance, will impress you with its architecture. In its Royal Chapel are the tomb and treasure of the Catholic Monarchs.
- Gothic and Renaissance styles also have an excellent representation in the heart of the city, specifically in the monumental Monastery of San Jerónimo.
- If you are passionate about art, don't miss the Palace of Charles V. There you will find the Museum of Fine Arts, with a collection of more than 2,000 works ranging from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Also, if poetry is your thing, don't forget to go to the Federico García Lorca House Museum.
Tapas and much more
Granada gastronomy includes Jewish influences, has an Arab aroma and a taste of tradition. The variety is great, but among all the options, the tapas stand out. They are an essential part due to their diversity, flavor and… it must be recognized, because it is common for them to be served free of charge with each drink.
Beyond this guaranteed success that are the tapas, here are other highlights:
- Beans with ham (Habitas con jamón): they are soft and small, and combine perfectly with the renowned Trevélez ham. If you top the dish with a fried egg, the pleasure will be maximum.
- Cod and Orange Soak, (Remojón de bacalao y naranja): This refreshing salad combines the salty flavor of cod with the citrus touch of orange, creating a light and healthy dish, perfect for hot days.
- Sacromonte Tortilla: the first requirement to taste this peculiar recipe is not to reject the offal. And it is made with lamb brains, kidneys, blood sausage... Mixed with the egg, they give rise to an omelette with an intense flavor and soft texture.
- Piononos: these sweet pastries consist of a spongy dough filled with cream and cinnamon. Originally from Santa Fe, they are so rich that they sell them throughout the province
- We could continue mentioning proposals such as the San Antón pot, the carnival curd, the soplillos from the Alpujarra, the pestiños from La Encarnación... But there is no room for more and it is time to reduce the calories with a local fruit: the pomegranate, the persimmons, prickly pears…
In all seasons, comfortable shoes
Granada enjoys a Mediterranean climate, but with marked variations, so don't trust it. From January to April, the days are pleasant, but the nights can be cold, so don't forget a warm garment. In May and June, temperatures are around 22°; and in July, the most intense heat arrives, making light clothing and sun protection essential. In August and September, the heat continues and there may be some showers, so an umbrella will come in handy. From October to December, a good coat is essential.
Whatever time of year you visit Granada, we recommend that you bring sunglasses and comfortable shoes so that your feet do not suffer excessively from the cobblestone streets and slopes. That's it for our tips for you to enjoy.
