We continue our journey by bike, heading all the way to Amsterdam!

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, blends history, art, and modernity seamlessly in a relaxed and picturesque atmosphere. With its UNESCO World Heritage-listed canals, world-renowned museums, and vibrant city life, it’s a destination you’re bound to love as we celebrate our 15th anniversary.

In this article, we’ll share everything you shouldn’t miss, what to savour, and what to pack in your suitcase. Don’t miss out!

Canals, bikes, museums, and unique corners

Amsterdam is a cosy and accessible city, celebrated for its historic canals, distinctive architecture, and rich cultural offerings. With world-famous museums, an extensive cycling network defining its lifestyle, and a unique blend of history and modernity, Amsterdam offers a truly diverse and authentic experience for its visitors.

If you’re keen to capture the city’s essence over a weekend, follow our tips below:

  • Explore the historic centre, starting your tour at Dam Square, the heart of Amsterdam. Here, you’ll find the Royal Palace and the National Monument. Just a short walk away, you can visit the Anne Frank House, a moving and educational experience. The Jordaan neighbourhood, with its narrow streets filled with boutiques, cafés, and art galleries, is the perfect spot for a break during your exploration.
  • Stroll along the canals. As you may already know, the canals are one of the city’s main attractions. Begin your tour with the canal ring known as Grachtengordel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area features three bridges: Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, and Herengracht—each unique yet equally charming.
  • For a unique perspective on the city and its peculiar architecture, we recommend a boat tour along the canals. It’s an enjoyable experience at a reasonable price.
  • Rent a bike and ride through Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s green lung and one of its largest parks. It’s vast, making it an excellent place for a leisurely cycle, a relaxing break on the grass, or a drink at one of the park’s cafés.
  • Immerse yourself in the cultural scene by choosing a couple of museums to visit—there’s plenty to choose from. Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands’ national museum, houses an extensive collection of art and history, including masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Van Gogh Museum, dedicated to the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, boasts the largest collection of his paintings and drawings in the world. Stedelijk Museum, known for its collection of modern art.

Snacks to enjoy as you explore the city

We call them tapas; they call them snacks. In Amsterdam, snack-style dishes are common, and you’ll find plenty to grab from street stalls while wandering around. Here are a few delights you absolutely must try and enjoy!

  • Bitterballen: A type of croquette filled with meat, usually served with mustard. You’ll find these in most establishments, and we highly recommend pairing them with a good Dutch beer in a pub.
  • Chips, also known as Friet, Frites, Patat, or Vlaamse Frieten. These chunky fries are served with various sauces, most commonly mayonnaise.
  • Broodje haring: A famous sandwich made with raw herring, accompanied by pickles and onions.
  • Dutch cheese selection: Create your own tasting session in one of the many cheese shops or markets around the city. The most famous varieties include Gouda, Edam, and Alkmaar.
  • Fried fish, or Lekkerbekje/Kibbeling, is battered white fish served with different sauces.
  • Rijsttafel: Originating from Indonesia, a culture with a strong presence in Amsterdam, this dish consists of rice served with a variety of small dishes such as egg rolls, pickles, satays, legumes, fried meats, and vegetables. For this one, you’ll need to take a proper break and enjoy it seated.
  • Need something sweet? You can’t leave the city without trying Stroopwafels. These large waffle-style biscuits are filled with caramel and can be topped with extras for those with a serious sweet tooth.

Unpredictable weather? Pack an umbrella—it’s your best ally

The weather in Amsterdam can be summed up in one word: Unpredictable. Each day is a surprise here. Due to its location and the influence of the North Atlantic, it’s characterised by humidity, moderate temperatures, and wind.

Winter: Temperatures range from 0°C to 7°C, with a high chance of rain or snow. Wind chill can make it feel even colder. Pack a warm coat, windproof layers, thermal clothing, gloves, and a scarf.

Autumn: One of the city’s most picturesque seasons. Temperatures hover between 7°C and 10°C, with plenty of rain. Again, an umbrella is a must-have.

Spring: Good luck! Average temperatures are around 13°C, but the weather can swing dramatically. You could start the day in the rain and end it in a T-shirt under the sun. Be prepared with a raincoat, umbrella, and some lighter clothing.

Summer: The weather is more pleasant, with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Light clothing will be your friend, but don’t forget—yes, you guessed it—an umbrella! Rain is less frequent but still possible.

No matter the weather, one thing is certain: you’ll enjoy this city come rain or shine. Amsterdam is the jewel of the Netherlands—a Bohemian, sustainable, and charming city.
