Sea, mountains and delicious ensaimadas, fall in love with Mallorca, the fifth stop on our trip!
The largest of the Balearic Islands is a jewel of the Mediterranean, a place where sea and mountains create a dream landscape. Mallorca offers a great experience with its hidden coves of turquoise waters, the Sierra de Tramontana and its fairytale villages. As if these reasons were not enough to visit it, the ensaimada, emblem of local gastronomy, is the perfect dessert to place the candles of our fifteenth birthday. And to close the celebration, what better than to enjoy the vibrant Mallorcan night.
Between the Mediterranean and the Sierra de Tramontana
In Mallorca, the sea embraces a land full of natural beauty and cultural heritage. To not miss anything, move around freely and access every corner, we recommend renting a car at Palma airport.
Let's start the route:
- Palma de Mallorca: the capital is a cocktail of elegance and tradition. The imposing Cathedral of Santa María, known as La Seu, has the contributions of artists such as Gaudí and Barceló. History also lives in Can Joan de S'Aigo and Forn des Teatre, the Passeig des Born, Bellver Castle... and sleeps at night, when the nightlife awakens in force.
- There are many charming towns. Valldemossa, with its famous Cartuja; the Sóller tram; Deià, with its World Heritage landscape; the walled old town of Alcudia; Pollença and its 365 steps of Calvary; Fornalutx, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain… The list is long, but at some point we must stop for a dip.
- With coves it is like with villages: it is difficult to choose. They are hidden treasures among rocks and vegetation, presented by pebbles or white sand, and bathed by turquoise waters or so crystalline that the boats seem to float. Sa Calobra, Cala Mitjana, Es Trenc, Cala Agulla, Caló des Moro… Visit them and discover the cove you will always want to return to.
- For lovers of art and culture, there are three museums: the Juan March Foundation, Es Baluard and the Joan Miró Foundation. You also cannot miss the Coves del Drach, with its impressive underground lake, or the Sanctuary of Lluc.
Taste without regrets
Mallorcan cuisine is varied, tasty, healthy due to the presence of vegetables and often, strong due to the traditions of the mountains. We recommend:
- Coca de trampó, a kind of crunchy pizza dough covered with tomato, onion and red, green and yellow peppers.
- Variat is the ideal dish if you can't agree on what to order to share. A portion usually includes salad, cuttlefish pica pica, meatballs and something breaded like croquettes or fried squid.
- In autumn, the typical dish is arròs brut: rice bathed in a meat broth, vegetables, mushrooms, and spices.
- Pa amb oli is an institution, simple but delicious: Mallorcan brown bread covered with sausages, cheeses, vegetables...
- And to top it off, who can say no to an ensaimada, that soft dough rolled in a spiral, with dozens of different fillings, each one more delicious than the last, and covered in icing sugar.
This list cannot be without sobrasada, frit mallorquí, tubet, gato de almendra, coca de patata… We encourage you to try them all and, to enjoy them without regrets, swim in the Mediterranean or walk through the Sierra de Tramontana.
300 days of sunshine
The climate of Mallorca is one of its greatest attractions, with about 300 days of sunshine a year and little rain.
In spring, bring light clothing, a jacket for the evenings and good footwear, as it is a good time for mountain excursions. As in winter, when, with temperatures between 6°C and 15°C, you will need a good coat, especially when the sun goes down.
Summers are hot, reaching up to 40 °C in some areas, so don't forget short clothes, sandals, and a hat. In autumn, bring both sweaters and a swimsuit (the water temperature is still pleasant for those who are not sensitive to the cold).
When packing your suitcase, consider not only the season of the year, but also your plans, as temperatures vary between the warmer coast and the cooler mountains. With this in mind, you will be prepared for everything in Mallorca. Everything… except saying goodbye.
